Library news
A lovely collection of Norman Rockwell plates depicting scenes of family life, owned by Laura Kane of Standish, will be on display at the Windham Public Library now through March 20.
When asked to describe her interest in collecting these plates, she had this to say:
“Growing up, I always remember a book residing in our living room that held a collection of Norman Rockwell paintings. I never looked at it. Then one day when I was in my teens, my brother sat down with me and went through the book, page by page. He showed me his favorites, pointing out specific faces to me, describing the different themes. I was mesmerized What seemed to stand out the most to me, besides the fact that his work is able to create a bond between the viewer and the painting, were his faces. He was a master of expression and, subsequently, a marvelous storyteller. With only a two-dimensional illustration and no words to describe it, he managed to tell an entire story, partly with what his drawing obviously was able to show, but, more importantly, what it could evoke in the viewer’s imagination. His paintings placed me in situations dear to my heart. My collection of plates was a gift from my husband. Although they don’t represent some of Norman Rockwell’s more famous work, they are still part of his unique collection of Americana, full of warmth, sensitivity, and humor.”
