The Windham Town Council will interview candidates Feb. 10 for the open council seat vacated by Kaile Warren, who resigned last month citing health concerns.
Five residents submitted applications for the open seat by the Jan. 16 deadline. The candidates for the seat to represent the North District are Peter Busque, Priscilla Cutts, Vincent Giannotti, Brad Saucier and Timothy Warrow.
Warren’s term runs until 2010. Any appointee would hold the position until an election is held in November, at which time voters will elect someone to fill the remainder of the term.
The North District is defined as the area bounded on the south by the centerline of Routes 35 and115, on the east by the Gray town line, on the north by Raymond and Gray and on the west by Standish.
According to Chairwoman Carol Waig, the council will hold the interviews in private in executive session, though any discussion about the candidates, as well as the final decision, will be made in public. Councilors do not have to appoint a candidate if they cannot come to a consensus.
It is important that all seven councilors are present to vote on the candidates, Waig said. If no side prevails on the vote, it cannot be brought up again for a year, and the seat should be filled as soon as possible to allow for the council to conduct business as usual, she said.
The council accepted Warren’s resignation on Dec. 23. Warren said two heart attacks he suffered earlier in the month revealed a serious cholesterol problem that required his attention. He felt he could no longer devote the time needed to be an effective councilor while also running his business, the Rent-a-Husband home improvement company, and attending to his health.
