No one so far has indicated interest in the vacant spot on the Windham Town Council as of Tuesday afternoon, Town Clerk Linda Morrell said.

At their Dec. 23 meeting, councilors voted to accept through Friday, Jan. 16 applications for appointment to the North District position vacated by the resignation of Kaile Warren, who left the Town Council Dec. 18, citing health concerns.

Applicants must live in the North District, defined as the area bounded on the south by the centerline of Routes 35 and115, on the east by the Gray town line, on the north by Raymond and Gray and on the west by Standish.

Town Manager Tony Plante said Tuesday the application process is simply the way the Town Council decided to fill the position. Councilors are not required to follow the application process, he said, nor are they limited to it if no candidates come forward or if they cannot agree on a candidate.

“All the charter really requires is that they try to fill the seat,” Plante wrote in an e-mail. “It does not require them to appoint anyone.”

Warren’s term runs until 2010. Any appointee would hold the position until an election is held in November, at which time voters will elect someone to fill the remainder of the term.
