Casco residents will vote again on whether to repair the Casco Community Center, at a special town meeting Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., at the Central Fire Station.
Voters will be asked to authorize the town to borrow $530,000 to perform the minimum necessary repairs the building, with $80,000 of that amount to be reimbursed by the Friends of the Casco Community Center Committee within five years. The building, which used to house Casco High School, would be used for recreation programs and meeting space.
In June, voters approved $750,000 to repair the community center, though that funding was denied at a special town meeting in August. In November, voters defeated a citizen’s petition to tear down the building.
Town Manager David Morton presented the Board of Selectmen with a proposed scope of services on Dec. 16 to address the core issues that make the building unsafe for use – mold, structural problems and required changes to make the building accessible for those with disabilities.
The scope of work and projected costs were developed by a group of local contractors. The plans still need to be approved by an architect or engineer and be sent out to bid.
