A Gray man was convicted last week on three charges stemming from a home invasion last year in which the victim was beaten with a baseball bat.
Tyler McFarland, 27, was found guilty of elevated aggravated assault, robbery and burglary after a two-day jury trial in Cumberland County Superiour Court. His sentencing is scheduled for next month.
McFarland could also be facing charges stemming from an incident that occurred while he was out on bail in which he allegedly threatened a person with a shotgun then later kicked a hole in the wall of the state police barracks in Gray, according to Lt. Walter Grzyb of the Maine State Police. The case has been presented to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office, he said.
On Sept. 18, 2007, McFarland entered the Forest Lake Road home of Anthony Nelson, beat Nelson with a baseball bat and stole $200 cash and a bottle of the prescription painkiller OxyContin. McFarland was identified as the assailant and arrested after a short manhunt in January 2008.
On March 20, 2008, McFarland, who was staying at a Mayall Road home, got into an argument with a woman also staying at the home, according to Maine State Police Sgt. Michael Edes. When a friend arrived, Edes said, McFarland ran into the house, grabbed a shotgun came back outside and fired.
After being told he was going to be arrested for being in possession of and using a firearm, McFarland turned violent, Edes said. Several officers were needed to subdue him. He also kicked walls and drove his head through a wall in the barracks before being subdued, Edes added.
From that incident, Lt. Gryzb said, McFarland could face charges including violation of bail conditions, reckless conduct with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
