Firefighters spent over nine hours on Dec. 21 battling a blaze on Del Chadbourne Road in Bridgton.
Bridgton firefighters at around 3 p.m. received a report of a chimney fire at Kerry and Danielle Girard’s house at 219 Del Chadbourne Rd. The blaze turned out to be a structure fire mainly in the second floor attic space of the old farmhouse. Bridgton Fire Chief Glen Garland said he thought the home would be a total loss.
The owners of the house, who have two small children, were at home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.
Garland said windy and snowy conditions presented a challenge to firefighters. Due to slippery road conditions, trucks were delayed. Because the snow decreased visibility, it was hard for them to see parts of the house at times, Garland said.
Because the house was in a remote location with no hydrant service, firefighters had to lug water with tankers, Garland said, making several trips to a hydrant in North Bridgton and to Long Lake in Harrison.
“It was a battle,” Garland said, adding that the brutal cold took a toll on the crew as well. Garland said he didn’t know for sure what caused the fire, but it did not appear to be suspicious. The Girards did have insurance on the home, Garland said.
Non-monetary donations for the Girard Family are being accepted at the Bridgton Town Office from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and at Bridgton Police Dispatch Center at all other times. A monetary fund has been set up at Key Bank in Bridgton.
Nine fire departments were involved in battling the fire either at the scene or providing coverage.
