Olivia Verrill, a fourth grade student at Manchester School in Windham, was honored last week at the State House by state Rep. Gary Plummer, state Rep. Mark Bryant, teacher Barbara Brown, Gov. John Baldacci, Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron, and state Sen. Bill Diamond. Verrill, daughter of David and Leslie Verrill, was named the grade level winner in an energy tip contest held by Efficiency Maine. She urged people to plant trees outside of hot windows. She explained that, “in a few years, there will be shade and nice breezes instead of the sun’s hot, baking heat.” For her energy-saving tip, Verrill was awarded an Apple iPod Shuffle with a solar charger. Samantha Richard of George E. Jack Elementary in Standish was the fifth-grade winner.
