This photo at left is looking west from Bond Street, showing the north side of Main Street. Buildings in the photo looking right to left are the LeTarte Ski Shop and LeTarte Cleaners at 821 Main St., Ash Street, Maria’s Restaurant at 823 Main St., Dr. David Berlowitz (optometrist) and the Beauty Bar at 825 Main St., Portland Savings Bank at 827 Main St., and the Springer Block at 837-841 Main St., with Westbrook Hardware, Boulter’ Radio & Appliance, Parkers’ Dress Shop, Greater Portland Radio Inc. (WJAB radio station) and Riverside Apartments occupying the building. The LeTarte building was taken by urban renewal and a new Westbrook Hardware was built on the site (going out of business several years later). Maria’s Restaurant was destroyed by fire shortly before this photo was taken and the building was demolished. Village Laundry & Dry Cleaning now occupies this site. 825 Main St. is still standing with different tenants. Portland Savings Bank building is now TD Banknorth. The Springer Block was demolished and the site now is a parking lot.
