Windham Masons built their first hall on Windham Hill for $2,000. It was opened Jan. 19, 1867. The Windham Center Road was the main road at that time between Portland and Bridgton. Windham Hill was the center of the town’s activities and included a post office, church, tavern, stores and shops. By 1880 one man wrote “only the doctor and minister remain. All the stores are closed.”
The building of the “new road”, an adjustment to Route 302 had eliminated the need to travel the Windham Center Road. There were 130 members of the lodge in 1880 and by 1885 they had purchased land in North Windham. Shown here is the original building that was moved from Windham Hill to North Windham. To the right is the Union Church, built in 1874.
Today the former Masonic Hall has seen many changes in use and there is a new church. The 1874 church is now the Little Meetinghouse. In 1970, Windham’s Masonic Lodge built a new facility on River Road. (From the archives of Windham Historical Society)
