Always check the old books and Bibles before giving them away – you never know what you will find tucked into the pages. This old photo of Jeremiah Stuart is a good example and was found in an old Bible among other pictures. This is the only one identified, but puts a face to an ancestor of many in the local area.

Although the name is spelled Stuart or Stewart, this family settled in at East Windham in the 1700s. Marrying into the McIntosh and Libby families, the Stuarts helped give the area the nickname “Little Scotland.” Jeremiah Stuart was born in 1816 and died in 1866. He and his wife, Lucy Haines, had at least six children. They continued to live in Little Scotland – and some who live there today descend from Jeremiah. Photo and information from Windham Historical Society.
