Practice burn
On Sunday, the Sebago Fire Department burned down a small blue house, on the corner of South Fitch Road. The house was in a state of disrepair and was donated to the fire department for a practice burn.
Practice burns enable firefighters to train, and firefighters from many surrounding towns took part in the exercise. In the beginning, the firefighters practiced donning their Scott Air Packs, and learned what it is like to enter a building filled with smoke to look for victims as in a real fire.
Next, they partially extinguished the fire and a new team had the chance to enter the structure. As the fire progressed, trainees learned about draft control, and studied the fire as it progressed along the windows, doors and roof. Finally, the debris was tossed into the remaining cellar to clean up the site.
Bob Greene, who lives nearby, took photographs added a wonderful set of directions to the fire site in the typical Maine fashion.
“Start up Long Hill Road, go past where Fitch’s Store used to be, and then bear right where the little blue house used to be…oh yes, Fitch Road is what used to be Route 114 – now with the bridge closed – probably permanently – you have to go back to Long Hill Road, turn left onto Route 114, and take your next left to Fitch Road North. You can get there from here!”
