A new economic and community development director is being welcomed to Bridgton, while Sebago’s code enforcement officer will take on a new role.
Alan Manoian has been named to the Bridgton post and will have his first day next week. Jim Smith, code enforcement officer in Sebago, now adds interim town manager to his list of duties.
The Sebago Board of Selectmen decided to go with Smith as interim town manager Tuesday. Smith has worked for the town for about two years, according to Allen Crabtree, chairman of the Board of Selectmen.
Crabtree said four candidates were interviewed for the interim position and selectmen chose Smith because of his knowledge of and experience serving the town.
“The main reason that we selected him was that he knows the town employees well,” Crabtree said Wednesday. “And there was going to be a minimal learning curve to bring him up to speed.”
Smith will perform both jobs at the same time, Crabtree said, adding that winter tends to be a slow time of year for building permits and other code enforcement tasks.
Crabtree expects the upcoming search for a long-term town manager to take several months. Representatives from both the Maine Municipal Association and the Greater Portland Council of Governments will make presentations to selectmen about how they could help in the search process.
Although the Greater Portland Council of Governments helped when town officials hired their first town manager, selectmen performed the search themselves when they hired Robert Nicholson, who will resign Nov. 1 after two years in the job.
“We want to start the process as soon as we can,” Crabtree said.
Manoian will start as Bridgton’s new economic and community development director on Monday. Manoian replaces Micah Niemy, who resigned in March.
“I am extremely pleased that Bridgton has been able to secure an individual who has the knowledge and ability to continue our efforts in economic development and continue the close working relationships with the Board of Selectmen, Planning Board, and Chamber of Commerce, all of which is vital to Bridgton’s economy and job market,” said Bridgton Town Manager Mitchell Berkowitz.
“Getting jobs for Bridgton will be Alan’s priority and mission,” he added.
