Being a regular at a local hair salon proved the downfall for a Standish man indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury Aug. 8 on a charge of trying to rob the business in June.

Charles Adams, 41, and his partner, Georgette Griffin, 35, of 33 Richville Road in Standish, had both recently had their hair cut at New Hope Hairstyling at 140 Ossipee Trail East when Adams attempted to rob the salon while Griffin remained in a car, according to court records.

The couple, as well as Standish resident Scott Nason, 29, were all indicted for Class A robbery and charged with violating conditions of release.

A report from Detective Brian Ackerman of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said two employees and three customers, one a 10-year-old girl, were at the salon the afternoon of June 26. Witnesses said a man wearing a knit cap, checkered shirt, shorts and pink gloves entered the salon brandishing a gun and demanding money.

According to Ackerman’s report, the man was later identified by several witnesses as Adams, who Griffin said went to the salon for a haircut every six weeks. Theresa Wilcox, one of the employees in the store, later said she knew it was Adams because she had dated him 15 years ago and had recently cut his and his girlfriend’s hair at the salon.

Statements made to Ackerman indicate that when a store employee refused to give Adams money, he fired a single shot into the cash register and struggled with the employee before she sprayed him in the face with perm solution.

Adams then left the salon, crossed the road and got into a dark-colored Dodge Intrepid lacking a rear license plate, which was waiting for him.

The vehicle, which belonged to Griffin and Adams, was later found at Nason’s residence on Harmon Hill Road.

Adams and Nason were arrested the next day for probation violations and Griffin was arrested July 1. Adams had been convicted of tax evasion, Nason was convicted of aggravated assault in April 2007 and Griffin was convicted of assault of an officer in February 2008.
