After finding a homemade bomb in his front yard Sunday, John Nicosia came to the Standish Town Council Tuesday to ask them to ban parking in front of his house on Middle Jam Road.
This wasn’t the first incident on his road, Nicosia said, asserting that he has had a series of problems with people drinking, using drugs, dumping trash and letting their dogs run wild. Middle Jam Road, which branches off Route 35 along a canal near Eel Wier Dam, is a popular place for joggers, walkers and dog owners.
Nicosia said he picked up the bottle after he went for a morning walk Sunday. About a minute after he placed the bottle on the side of the road close to the canal, it exploded.
Detective Sgt. James Estabrook of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call around 8:30 a.m. Sunday about the homemade explosive. This was the fifth call the sheriff’s office received in 2008 from Middle Jam Road. Two calls reported suspicious activity, one criminal trespass, one illegal dumping and one found property.
Estabrook said Middle Jam Road was not a hub for crime in the county.
The town council voted to send the proposed parking ban for the 1,000 feet in front of Nicosia and his neighbor’s property to the Ordinance Committee.
