A Casco man died this morning while swimming near his boat in Sebago Lake.
Art Lester, an employee at the National Weather Service in Gray, was swimming back from his boat when he went under the water, witnesses told the Maine Warden Service.
Divers from the Maine Warden Service found Lester’s body at around 11:30 a.m.
Lester, who was in his early 60s, was a meteorological technician at the National Weather Service, where he was in charge of sending out the twice-daily balloons that help gather weather data.
The affable Lester was also for many years the voice of the Weather Service’s radio broadcasts. The broadcasts are now generated by a computer.
Two weeks ago, Lester joked with a reporter about the situation.
“You haven’t lived until you’ve been replaced by a computer,” he said with a laugh.
