A Standish man faces multiple charges after leading police on a high speed chase through Bangor and Veazie before jumping into the Penobscot River last weekend.

Maine State Police said Anthony Alfiero, 23, was pulled over on Interstate 95 in Bangor just after noon July 5 because his vehicle had expired temporary license plates.

After giving police a false name, Alfiero sped off with his girlfriend and her 18-month-old infant in his car, taking police through parts of Bangor, Orono and Veazie at speeds reaching 100 mph before abandoning the vehicle on a dead end street in Veazie, said Trooper Darren Vittum, who made the initial stop.

The car, with the girlfriend and toddler still inside, rolled around 50 feet before striking a set of trees and coming to a stop, Vittum said. Alfiero tried to elude capture by jumping in the Penobscot River, but later swam back to shore and was arrested.

Alfiero was charged with aggravated reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, and driving to endanger.
