The Libby-Mitchell American Legion baseball team has become quite familiar with Andrews Post as of late. The Zone 4 teams played a doubleheader on Saturday and met again Monday, with Andrews taking two of the three games.

Andrews, drawing its players from Portland High School, won 5-2 in Standish on Monday. The victory improved Andrews’ record to 7-5 in zone play, while Libby-Mitchell, which draws from Bonny Eagle and Scarborough high schools, fell to 5-4.

Brian Furey pitched a complete game to earn the win, striking out eight. Ed Bogdanovich doubled twice for Andrews and drove in a run. Chris Biskup added a pinch-hit RBI double. Furey and Joe Violette each had a pair of singles for Andrews.

Chris Bernard (2-2) took the complete-game loss for Libby-Mitchell. Lincoln Sanborn and Brendan Sullivan each had RBI singles for Libby-Mitchell, and Tim Grovo had a double.

In Saturday’s action in Portland, Andrews took game one 5-3 behind a complete game from P.J. Brogan, who struck out eight. Offensively, Brogan was a triple short of the cycle, as he singled, doubled and homered while driving in two runs.

Brian Moskevich singled and doubled for Libby-Mitchell.

Brogan started the second game on the mound for Andrews as well, but when he left after three innings, the Libby-Mitchell bats heated up. Libby-Mitchell scored five runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth en route to a 14-2 win in a game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule.

Moskevich worked a complete game to earn the win. Sanborn had three hits and a pair of RBIs and A.J. Ellison tripled and singled for Libby-Mitchell.

Brogan hit a two-run homer for Andrews.

Last Wednesday, Libby-Mitchell swept a doubleheader against Morrill Post (drawing from South Portland and Cape Elizabeth high schools) in Standish.

In the first game, a 5-4 win for Libby-Mitchell, Bernard pitched five innings to get the win. Grovo came on in relief and struck out the side in the sixth. Chris Gorham took the loss for Morrill.

Libby-Mitchell held a 4-0 lead entering the sixth inning before Morrill rallied for three runs. Both teams scored in the seventh, with Rutt coming through with a game-winning RBI. Rutt doubled and singled in the game while knocking in a pair of runs.

Libby-Mitchell took game two 7-4, as Sanborn pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts. Andrew Guay took the loss for Morrill.

Bernard hit a two-run homer, and Rutt and Grovo each had a pair of hits.

The Zone 4 Legion tournament is scheduled to start on July 22, with the top eight teams qualifying. The top two teams in the zone tournament advance to the state tournament, slated to start on Aug. 2.
