Matt M. Hoidal, executive director of Camp Sunshine in Casco is joined by Anna M. Gould, board chairwoman and a camp founder for the celebration of the expansion of the Viterbi Family Activity Center at the camp Saturday.

The camp, which supports children with life threatening illnesses and their families, has added a second floor to the activity center, an expansion of more than 7,000 square feet.

The added space includes a teen room, library, crafts classroom, parent’s discussion room, development office, teen room porch, and library solarium. Hoidal said he hoped the expansion would help the camp provide services throughout the year.

The expansion will be named in honor of Gorham-based Shaw Brothers Construction, as owners Dan and Jon Shaw, who are members of the Camp Sunshine board, contributed $250,000 to the expansion project. The cost of the expansion was estimated to be $1.2 million, according to Hoidal.

The camp was opened in 1984. Since then, more than 16,000 guests have visited for week-long retreats. Courtesy photo by Sharon Kitchens
