Getting a ring

Scott Fuller, an artist and art professor at Saint Joseph’s College, was awarded an Olympic Ring Award in Beijing, China, May 31 as part of the Olympic Landscape Sculpture Contest.

Fuller, a Poland resident, co-designed a sculpture called “Reaching for Courage: Gateway to China,” with Portland artist Asherah Cinnamon. He was one of 50 Ring Award winners out of 290 design finalists selected as “Excellent Works.”

The sculpture, which will be displayed at the Olympics this summer, features a series of towering gates, each resembling a flame. The sculpture will be exhibited with the works of 29 finalists who received gold, silver, and bronze medals.

The design for the sculpture was viewed in 35 countries during the last year as part of an tour exhibiting the best works chosen from the original 2,400 designs submitted from 82 countries. There were only two other American sculpture designs featured in the tour of finalists.

Fuller and Cinnamon were the only Americans present at the awards ceremony in Beijing. Fuller met victims of the recent earthquake as the award ceremony also served as a tribute to them.

“I hugged a teacher who had lost his school, and I promised to build a sculpture in remembrance for his province,” said Fuller.

Fuller believes the sculpture contest was a powerful diplomatic tool that China gave the world. “It’s a case of art promoting global goodwill,” he said. “The real importance of this experience was creating peaceful international dialog and cultural exchange,” he added.

Celebrate the solstice

Rippling Waters Organic Farm is welcoming summer with a Solstice Celebration Sunday, June 22, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be plenty of activities for both children and adults from boating and swimming, to afternoon workshops and a cook-out.

Organic workshops include Getting Kids in the Gardening Act, led by farm board member Mary McNeil, and Herbs for Healthy Skin, taught by Pat Blake. Blake is the owner of Native Ways, a small business in Otisfield, specializing in imaginative garden design emphasizing the importance of indigenous plants, and edible landscape.

Blake is also the co-owner of Great Things Inc. located in Casco. Blake and her business partner Holly Ilhoff have a complete line of pure, botanically based products for skin, pets and babies. The workshop will concentrate on those simple recipes you can make using ingredients from your own kitchen and nearby fields and meadows. Participants will be able to try Royal Milk herbal cleanser and Spa in a Jar herbal facial masque.

Aliens among us

The Obsessive Comedy Disorder will present two episodes of “The Three Aliens Radio Show,” on Friday, June 20, at 8 p.m. at the Schoolhouse Performing Arts Center. The Three Aliens Radio Show is written and directed by Limerick resident Keith Halliburton. Future episodes of show will be presented at the Schoolhouse Arts Center throughout the year. Fill a bag

The Limington Extension will host yard sales Saturday, June 21, and 28 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at 476 Sand Pond Road, in Limington. There will be new and used items from clothes to furniture. A yard sale sponsored by the Stash Masters Quilt Group to benefit local chapters of Project Linus will be held Saturday, June 21, at 960 Pequawket Trail (Route 113), next to the Steep Falls Cemetery in Steep Falls. The sale runs from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and features lots of household items, craft supplies, etc. There will also be an awesome 25-cent selection with something for everyone. The rain date for the sale is June 28.
