Saint Joseph’s College has named Corey McCarthy of Standish as sports information director. McCarthy served as the interim director during the previous academic year and has been employed as an assistant baseball coach at the college for four seasons. McCarthy, originally from Inkster, N.D., previously worked at Marshwood High School in South Berwick as a fitness specialist and assistant baseball coach for four years.

Old Band

The Standish American Legion Post 128 is pleased to be hosting the Chandler Band at this year’s Standish Family Festival. The band, originally named the Portland Band, was started in 1833, and was later renamed the Chandler Band after the band leader Daniel Chandler.

It is thought to be the nation’s second oldest professional band. In 1861, Daniel Chandler and his band were mustered into the service of the Union Army, and they served until the close of the Civil War.

“We are very excited about being able to sponsor this great band this year,” said Post Adjutant Will Hamilton.

Chandler’s Band plays patriotic marches and tunes across the state of Maine including annually at the Bowdoin College Commencement Ceremony. The band will be performing during the festival at Standish Memorial Park Friday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m.

June toddler movie night will be canceled due to the annual town meeting on Saturday, June 14. This is a large meeting and as a result, the council chambers needs to be set up in advance. Movie night will resume on Friday, July 11.

Lifeguard classes anyone?

Do you know a teenager looking for a great job as a lifeguard? Saint Joseph’s College is offering the American Red Cross certification for waterfront lifeguarding, which teaches the skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies, including cardiopulmnary resuscitation and first aid.

Classes meet Monday, June 23, through Friday, June 27, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Alfond Recreation Center on the Standish campus. The cost is $350.

Participants must be at least 15 years old by June 27 and able to swim 500 meters without stopping. In addition, they need to pass an endurance test.

Persons attending all classes, scoring an 80 percent or better on the written test, and performing all water skills satisfactorily will receive the American Red Cross training certificates for waterfront fifeguarding with first aid and CPR/FRP-AED.
