Off the road

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s office in cooperation with the York County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police conducted a license checkpoint April 30 on the Standish/Limington town line on Route 25.

The checkpoint, set up by the Limington Rapids recreation area, began at 5 a.m. and continued until 9 a.m. During the four-hour period, sheriff’s checked 407 operators.

As a result, three drivers were arrested for operating after suspension; James Pooler, 41, of Limington; Roberta Bragan, 45, of Limington; and Debra Bouvier 39, of Westbrook.

Several summonses were also issued for various charges including, possession of a usable amount of marijuana, displaying a fictitious inspection sticker and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Grants given to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety paid for the checkpoint. The grants are given out to support the efforts of local police in taking suspended drivers off the roadways.

Play ball

Want a casual game that’s lots of fun? Then the Standish Adult Softball League is the league for you. Standish Recreation is excited to introduce adult softball two nights a week. The league will start May 20, and will last eight weeks.

All games will be played at the softball field in Steep Falls on Boundary Road between the fire station and elementary school. Play will begin at 6 p.m. and end when nobody wants to play anymore or the sun is down, preferably the latter.

Tuesday night is co-ed night and Friday night will be guys or ladies night, depending upon the demand. Players must be 18 years old and registration is required. Use the general registration forms available online at www.standish.org. We suggest that you bring your own glove but there will be some gloves on hand. Bats and balls will be provided.

A ‘Peak’ at eating

Wildridge Garden Club presents gardening and local food expert,

Roger Doiron, at the Standish Congregational Church at 25 Oak Hill Road May 12 at 7 p.m.

His multi-media presentation “Dig in: Enjoying Peak Flavors and Peak Health in a Time of Peak Oil and Peak Anxiety” offers an informative and entertaining look at our food system including the challenges we face and the opportunities we have for facing them.

Discovering Fairies

If you build a house for the fairies, will they come to visit? Join Standish Recreation at the Town Hall Saturday, May 10 to find out.

Let your child discover the secret world of fairies through Tracy Kane’s award-winning book “Fairy Houses.” Hear the story, have a snack and then build a fairy house of your own. This will be a fairy adventure not to miss. The adventure begins for kid ages 4-7 at 9:30 a.m. Children 8 and older can take the journey at 10:45 a.m. For more information call 642-2875

The Bonny Eagle High School Drama Club presents “Damn Yankees” at the Bonny Eagle auditorium on Saco Road at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Standish recreation is hosting their monthly movie night for pre-school age toddlers at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at the Standish Municipal Center.
