Races for selectmen, not for school board

Two incumbents are facing a challenger for a pair of selectmen seats in next month’s Buxton municipal election, but there are no candidates for two school director seats.

Monday was the deadline for submitting nomination papers. The town election will be on Tuesday, June 10.

Veterans on the Board of Selectmen, Bob Libby and Jean Harmon, are seeking re-election to three-year terms. But Keith Emery, a veteran on the Planning Board who works for the town’s Public Works Department, is also vying for one of the seats.

Two directors of School Administrative District 6, incumbents Dennis Santolucito and James Smith Jr., are not running. Santolucito filled the vacancy of Sandra Plummer, who resigned last year, and one-year remains of that term. Smith’s term is for three years.

Buxton provides four school directors with Cindy Hazelton’s term expiring next year and Karen Connary’s in 2010.

Town Clerk John Myers said the absence of school candidates on this year’s ballot marks a first during his 22-year tenure. Myers is seeking re-election to a three-year term and is unopposed for town clerk.

His sister-in-law, Susan Myers, is seeking re-election as tax collector, a post she has held since 1995.

Planning Board member Caroline Segalla is one of three candidates along with David Savage Sr. and Emily Walsh seeking two, three-year terms on the board. Other candidates are Marie Clements, one seat, one year, Personnel Review Committee; Penny Booker and Richard Emery Jr., running unopposed with four, three-year Budget Committee terms available; and Dora Clements, one Budget Committee seat for two years.

There are no candidates for a one-year term on the Budget Committee and for one seat available for two-year and three-year terms on the Personnel Review Committee.
