A spark from static electricity could be the cause of a fire that consumed an auto repair shop in Windham April 17.

John Wescott, deputy fire chief of the Windham Fire Department, said firefighters were called to Jimino’s Saab & Volvo at 186 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) at around 2:50 p.m. The firefighters found the repair garage, located about 15 feet behind a home, fully in flames when they arrived.

Wescott said it appeared the fire began when static electricity ignited gasoline someone working at the garage was draining from a car tank.

With the repair shop already on fire, firefighters concentrated on keeping the fire from spreading to the Jimino’s nearby home. Fire departments from Westbrook, Gorham, Standish and Raymond assisted in fighting the blaze.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection was called to the scene to contain fluids and lubricants used in the repair shop. No environmental damage was reported as a result of the fire, but additional cleanup occurred April 18.

Route 302 was closed for more than three hours between the intersections at Albion and Pope roads, Wescott said.

“It was a very quick response and everything went together well,” Wescott said about fighting the fire.

Firefighters from Windham and four surrounding towns fight a fire at Jimino’s Saab & Volvo on Route 302 Thursday. The blaze destroyed the garage, but crews prevented the fire from spreading to the Jimino home at right.
