Making a visit
Dean Scontras, a Republican candidate for the 1st District Congressional seat in Maine, will spend the day in Windham, Wednesday, April 23.
After spending the day visiting businesses and individuals, Scontras will also meet the public at 7 p.m. at the Little Meeting House at 719 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) for a “town meeting” style forum to discuss his candidacy and issues facing the voters.
Have voices, will travel
To pay for its May tour of the Northeast, including a stop in New York City, the Windham Chamber Singers choir is hosting events throughout April.
On Friday, April 18, the choir invites you to dance the night and the morning away. From 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. at the North Windham Union Church, the choir will host a dance-a-thon. Come dressed in the slickest, swellest, coolest, grooviest outfit of the decade of your choice. Prizes will be awarded to the true Lord of the Dance and the Dancing Queen.
On April 26, the Chamber Singers will host a Kids Night Out at the North Windham Union Church. The cost will be $10; it is open to children K-5 from 5-8 p.m.
Books for sale
The Windham Public Library will hold a book sale Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Readers will be able to buy adult hard cover books for $1, paperbacks for 50 cents, videos and CDs for $1, children’s books (except hardcover chapter books) are 25 cents, and children’s hardcover chapter books are 50 cents.
There will also be a preview sale Friday, April 25, from 6:30 -8:30 p.m. The admission to the preview sale is $10 per person.

Vacation show
The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers from Bar Harbor, will be performing “Everybody Loves Pirates” at the Windham Town Hall Gym Friday, April 25 at 1:30 p.m. The first 80 people to arrive will receive a free admission ticket to the Children’s Museum of Maine. This free performance is provided by the Windham Public Library and the Children’s Museum of Maine and funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, a state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Association meets
The Smith Cemetery Association will meet April 29 at the Windham Public Library at 7 p.m. Dues are $5 and the money is used to fix roads in the cemetery, repair stones and pay for water. You may send your dues or donations to June Hawkes, 285 Windham Center Road, Windham, Maine 04062.
Cancer Workshop
The 30th annual American Cancer Society Living With Cancer Conference will be held Wednesday, May 7, from 7:45 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.
The theme is “Celebrating 30 years of Information and Support….Hope for the Future.” This is a free, daylong conference for cancer patients and survivors, family members, caregivers, and medical professionals (there is a small fee for professionals).
Attend a variety of workshops, visit community resource exhibits, and share similar experiences and stories with others touched by cancer.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, the founding director of the Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston; a breast cancer surgeon; award-winning author; and breast cancer survivor who speaks from both sides of the stethoscope. Happy birthday
There was a surprise 80th birthday party for Josie Morrell at the Odd Fellows Hall April 5. The party was given by her children; Martha Poland, John Morrell, Peter Morrell and Edwin Morrell who came from Florida. Also attending were John Poland, Jamie and Chelsi Parker, Randy Morrell, Dana Morrell, Kathy and Brittany Gilman, James and Michele Farwell and family, Kimberly Morrell, Bill and Jen Tom and Joshua, Nathalie Lombard and Jean McKay. Josie’s actual birthday is April 2.
Food Pantry Reminder
The Windham Food Pantry will be closed on Thursday mornings from April through October. Seniors are encouraged to come in on Mondays. Any senior wishing to come in early on Monday should call Madeline at 892-1931 or come in between 5:30 and 7 in the evening. This will be for the summer only.
Happy anniversary
On Saturday, April 5, family and friends gave Beth and Donnie Hall a surprise 25th wedding anniversary party at their home in Windham. The surprise started out by having a limousine pick them up at Hall Implement Company. After a morning of work, Beth and Donnie were totally surprised and could not believe this was happening. The party was held in the afternoon hours, approximately 100 guests attended. Their actual anniversary date is April 16, 1983.
Support group meets
The Windham Cancer Support Group will meet Monday, April 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Windham Public Library meeting room. The speaker is Cathy McDonald, a breast center clinical nurse specialist. Topic will be Physical Changes After Cancer. Anyone who has been affected by cancer personally, or through a friend/relative is invited to the meeting. Suppertime
Something new is happening at Windham Hill United Church of Christ. A “gourmet supper” will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Road. Join them for a fabulous roast beef dinner with all the extras from beginning to end of the meal. The price is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
