A Casco man arrested after a violent home invasion in February was indicted on robbery and burglary charges by a Cumberland County grand jury yesterday.

Nicholas Small, 20, faces a Class A robbery charge and Class B burglary charge. He is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said Small broke into a home at 4 Heritage Way in Casco Feb. 27, where a woman, 29, was staying with her three children.

Dion said the woman woke up when her dogs started barking. When checking on her children, she found Small, whom she knows, hiding behind a bedroom door holding a pipe wrench.

According to Dion, Small then followed the woman as she went to call for help and tried to steal her purse. In the ensuing struggle, Small struck the woman with the wrench before the two fell down a stairway into the basement. Small then fled through the basement door.

Dion said detectives investigating the attack learned Small was hiding at a home in Naples, where he was arrested.

His victim was treated for abrasions and contusions to her head and torso that were considered non life-threatening injuries.

Nicholas Small has been indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury on charges stemming from a Casco home invasion Feb. 27.
