Happy hunting

The Easter egg hunt, co-sponsored by Sebago Volunteers and Sebago Recreation, was a big success. Corinne Davis, recreation director, estimated that over 70 children participated Saturday, March 22 at Sebago Elementary School.

Eggs were hidden on the snow-covered playground and children gathered them in bags, and baskets they had brought from home. While the day was cold, the sun shone brightly on the seekers.

Once all the eggs were found, everyone went into the school cafeteria, where parents enjoyed coffee, and the children had hot cocoa and snacks. Each child’s eggs were counted and returned to Davis.

The winners included Gavin Dolloff, 3, with 12 eggs. Kindergartner Isaac Holland won in the 4-5-year-old group with 10 eggs. Hannah Chadwick found 12 eggs and won in the 6-7-year-old group. There was a three-way tie for the 8-9 year olds, as Molly Christensen, Sasha Perham and Anja Schwieterman each found four eggs. Brandan George, 10, won the 10-12-year-old group with 10 eggs. Every child did leave with a prize.

Winners of each of five age categories had first choice at the “prize” table. Then other children the same age chose a prize, such as jump rope or a punching ball (the punching balls were very popular).

Davis asked me to thank all the people who helped make the event possible, especially the McLaughlin family, who worked all week on the hunt, the members of the Sebago Volunteers and Julie Lingotis, who announced the winners and helped the children pick their prizes.

On display

Local artist Wendy Newcomb sketched three scenes of Sebago Lake, which are on display in the lobby of the Merchants Savings Bank in Windham. The public is invited to vote for their favorite of the three drawings through April 15. Newcomb will then paint the winning scene, and it will be installed in the bank lobby.

Newcomb painted many animals along the hallways of Sebago Elementary School along with Evelyn Abrams. Her paintings were used for covers on L.L. Bean catalogs. She also has a mural on the wall at the Naples Public Library, at the entrance.

Strike up the bands

The spring band concerts for School Administrative District 61 are coming soon. The middle and high school bands are having a combined concert April 3 at Lake Region High School in Naples at 7 p.m.

The Sebago fourth- through sixth-graders, along with fifth- and sixth-graders from the Naples, Bridgton, and Casco elementary schools will have a combined concert April 17. I will let you know the time and location once I have that information.

A fair day

The Sebago Elementary School is holding its annual Science Fair April 2. Last year more than 40 students participated in the fair with both projects, and displays of collections. This year’s fair is open to the public from 6:15-7:30 p.m.

Taking the plunge

I am going to be taking the plunge at the third annual Diamond Dip Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m. at Nason’s Beach to help support the Sebago baseball and softball teams. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and food for those who are watching the dip. It should be a lot of fun. For more information, call 787-3983.

Good lessons

The members of Spaulding Memorial Library asked to print this thank-you note to Tim Smith and Anita Chadbourne, of Sebago Emergency Management Services. They conducted the informative class on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the automated external defibrillator held at the library.

The 14 participants learned the updated techniques of CPR for adults, children and infants. They also learned how to use the defibrillator that is housed at the library. The Heimlich Maneuver for choking was also demonstrated and practiced by all the participants.

The library is one of several places in town that has a defibrillator. Other places are Sebago Elementary School, Sebago Town Hall, the gym at the old town hall and all the fire engines. Closing notes

Spring is here at last. Everyone is getting out more, the sun is out longer, and is very bright these days. We shall soon clear off the ball fields to get them ready for the season – once the snow is melted.

I have seen signs of grass and the very large snow banks are slowly disappearing. Bean supper season has arrived. I saw two boys on bicycles Easter Sunday. That is a sure sign of spring. Have a great week, I will see you here again next week.
