A broken water main early Sunday in Westbrook has closed the section of East Bridge Street between Route 302 and Carlson Street.

A Portland Water District crew is repairing the 12-inch main and Westbrook Public Safety expects repairs to take most of the day. The crew didn’t know what caused the main to break.

The leak, which has left several homes in the area without water, was discovered about 1 a.m. by Westbrook police. Eastbound traffic on East Bridge Street is being detoured from Carlson Street to Austin Street.
