Library a Cornerstone

The Casco Public Library was selected to become a Cornerstones of Science partner recently.

Cornerstones of Science received a major donation of $300,000 from Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in support of the expansion of its science literacy programs to libraries in Maine and across the nation over the next three years. This year the expansion focused in Maine and 14 libraries have been selected to join the partnership.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., an international company that sells sophisticated lab equipment and software, funds science books and literacy programs in Maine libraries through Cornerstones of Science

“We are one of the libraries chosen to be a partner of Cornerstones of Science along with Raymond Village Library and Windham Public Library. We are all very excited to be part of this program,” said Carolyn Paradise, the director of the Casco Public Library.

COS is an award-winning national science literacy initiative that connects children, teens and adults to science and technology through superb books, programs, and opportunities for citizen science. It originates from Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine.

“We are so pleased to announce that through the generosity of Thermo

Fisher Scientific we have added 14 Maine libraries to the Cornerstones of Science partnership, said Jocelyn Hubbell, the program’s executive director. “I am so excited about our new partners. It has been wonderful to meet with all of them and see their excitement and hear about their own visions for science literacy in their communities. This was a competitive process and they all deserve kudos. Though we added several more libraries than we anticipated this year, we did have to turn several worthy potential partners away. They have been encouraged to apply next year when we will open the call again for partners in Maine, as well as across the nation.”

Cornerstones of Science partner libraries share the vision and serve as intellectual centers of their towns. They add Cornerstones designated books to their collections, connect their patrons to the booklists and science resources on the Cornerstones Web site, encourage children and youth to participate in Read, Write & Win, the annual book review writing and illustration contest. And, depending on their partnership level, they also may offer science programs developed by Cornerstones, bring scientists and science authors into their libraries for presentations, and collaborate to develop new programs that can be used by all the libraries in the partnership.
