Correction: An earlier Web account of this accident incorrectly listed Peter Nealey as one of the drivers.
Four people were hospitalized following a head-on collision in Windham last week.
Officer Peter Fulton of the Windham Police Department said that at 1:22 p.m. Feb. 7, a Ford Escort driven by a Megan Whitzell, 18, of Westbrook, collided with a Chevrolet sedan near 645 River Road.
Fulton said all parties involved wore seat belts and it saved their lives. The Ford driver and her passenger, Peter Nealey, 16, were the most seriously injured.
A small dog in the Ford was unrestrained and killed in the accident.
Fulton said Donna Bragdon, 59, of Windham, was driving the Chevrolet. Passengers were her daughter Rebecca Bragdon, 26, and her two children Wyatt, 2, and Jacoby, 3 months old. The two women were hospitalized, but Fulton said the children wore car seats and unharmed
Two of the people spent a few days in the hospital, according to Fulton. He said no one was critically injured.
“We’re pretty happy about that,” he said. Both cars were totaled.
Fulton said the accident is being reconstructed to find out the exact cause, but winter conditions helped cause the Ford to cross the center line.
“No question about it. Roads at the time were slushy,” said Fulton. He said the Ford was southbound and went off to the side, then overcorrected and contacted the sedan.
