Biddeford 5

Gorham 2

The Biddeford Tigers just keep on winning.

Cam Madore had a pair of goals to lead Biddeford past visiting Gorham 5-2 Saturday night at Biddeford Ice Arena. The Tigers also got goals from Nick Reny, Trevor Fleurent and Craig Anton. David Gushee recorded both Gorham goals.

The Tigers dominated the first period, keeping the puck in the attacking zone for extended periods of time. They finally got on the board just over three minutes into the game. Madore took a pass from Fleurent behind the net and skated out to the right faceoff circle where he fired a wrister that beat Gorham goalie Donnie Gearan for a 1-0 Tigers lead.

Madore struck again just a few minutes later. Fleurent skated the puck into the Gorham end, but was hit and the puck knocked loose. Madore was there to pick it up and fire it on net. The shot rippled the twine, and the Tigers lead was 2-0.

“We’re coming off a pretty tough game against Cape, even though it was a win,” said Biddeford coach Jamie Gagnon. “I thought our effort was there but we didn’t finish well. So we thought it was important to put in three periods of effort tonight. We played well in all three zones and we did a better job of possessing the puck.”

Gushee cut the Biddeford lead in half late in the first period. He took a pass from DJ Hanson and fired from the slot. His shot found its way past Cody Petit into the top shelf. The goal gave the Rams some life and a one-goal deficit heading into the first intermission.

The Tigers erased Gushee’s goal early in the second. Madore sent the puck ahead to Fleurent on a breakaway. Fleurent fired in a wrist shot to give his team a 3-1 lead just 44 seconds into the second period.

For the balance of the second period, the Tigers were taking their shots at Gearan. But Gearan was up to the task and turned away 12 shots in the period. He finished with 44 saves.

“Their goalie played well,” Gagnon said. “There were a couple of plays that he looked well out of position, but still made the save. He got the job done. We didn’t do a great job of finishing tonight, but he did a great job of keeping the puck out of the net and that’s the bottom line when it comes to goaltending.”

The Tigers did manage to get another one past Gearan near the end of the second. Anton snuck one through the five hole to make it a 4-1 score.

Reny scored his goal 47 seconds into the third period and the Tigers had a 5-1 lead. Midway through the third Gushee scored again for the Rams with a wraparound power play goal. But it was too late.

Despite the loss, Gorham head coach Eric Wales was happy with the effort from his team in keeping the potent Biddeford power play in check.

“We played a good game,” he said. “We have nothing to show for it. They are the best team in the stat-but I think for my team that’s the best 45 minutes we’ve played this year. We knew going in if we don’t stay out of the box we better work hard to kill the penalties. The kids worked hard and I’m very proud. I’m proud of how they played.”

The Rams dropped to 4-12 with the loss. They will play Kennebunk Friday. The Tigers improved to 16-0 with the win. They were scheduled to face off with Thornton Academy on Wednesday.
