Honor Society Inductions
The parents of Zackery Betty, Kari Christensen, Maegen Johnson, Karli Kesson, Zachary Litif, and Samantha Komulainen-York recently celebrated the induction of their children into the National Honor Society.
Betty, son of Paul and Patricia Betty of Standish, is a member of the Bonny Eagle Drama Club and Select Chorus. Betty is also a member of the youth dance Company UpBeat Feet, where he participates in their outreach program and community fundraisers.
Christensen a high honor student and daughter of David and Janie of Wildridge Road, plays Varsity basketball and is also a member of the Varsity girls soccer team.
John and Susan Johnson’s daughter Maegen is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and a Co-Captain of the Bonny Eagle girls varsity softball team as well as the Frozen Ropes Elite Fastpitch indoor softball team in Portland. In her spare time Maegen volunteers for the Fight Against Cancer Society.
Karli Kesson, of Perimeter Avenue is the daughter of Bill and Julie Kesson, and a member of student council. Kesson is the manager of the Varsity football and basketball teams, and plays tennis for Bonny Eagle. The summer before her junior year, Kesson was a math and reading tutor.
Standish resident Zachary Litif, son of Marc and Jacque Litif of Busque Boulevard, is Treasurer of the Foreign Language Honor Society, a member of the T-Cell Club, and student council. Litif volunteers with the non-profit group Safe Passage and last year traveled with the group to Guatemala.
Samantha Komulainen-York, is the daughter of Diane Komulainen-York of Standish and Jeffrey York of South Portland. Komulainen-York is a performer at the Schoolhouse Performing Arts Center in Sebago Lake. She has played the title role of Cinderella, and also participates in dance at the Center of Movement in Gorham. Komulainen-York co-hosts a radio show on the community radio station WJZF.
Lace Them Up
The town of Standish has two public skating rinks that are open to the public throughout the winter months. The rink in Steep Falls is located on Mill Road, just behind the Steep Falls Market. The rink in Sebago Lake Village is located at Johnson Field and has a warming hut. Both are lighted until 10:30 p.m.
Sno-Seekers Winterfest
If you have never been on a snowmobile but are interested, join the Standish Sno-seekers on Saturday, February 2, at 9 a.m. at Johnson Field on Route 35 and talk to club members to find out about the ins and outs of owning a sled. Free rides will be offered.
There will be refreshments for sale and activities for kids such as free rides. If you have a snowmobile, bring it out for a free safety check and an afternoon snowmobile tour of the Standish trail system.

Story Time
The Portland Water District invites preschoolers to join it for themed, read-aloud story times and related activities during the winter months. The books and activities aim to build upon natural curiosities about the environment. All events are free and take place at the Sebago Lake Ecology Center at the intersection of routes 237 and 35 in Standish on Fridays from 10 a.m.-noon. Snacks will be provided.

Standish Recreation is hosting a free ice skating party at the Jonson Field ice rink. There will be a bonfire, refreshments and music provided. The party starts at 6:00 p.m.
