Gorham 7

Westbrook 0

Getting one shorthanded goal in a hockey game is quite an accomplishment. Getting two in the same game is a rare feat. But getting those two goals on the same penalty, well, that’s almost unheard of.

But Gorham’s David Gushee did just that on Jan. 17 against Westbrook. The junior forward scored twice on the same penalty in the first period to help pace the Rams to a 7-0 win over the Blazes at the USM Ice Arena.

Gushee got his first shorthanded goal at 4:07 of the first period. After Westbrook’s Joel Chadbourne was called off for tripping, Gushee picked off a pass in the Westbrook end and fired it past Blazes goalie Preston Peabbles to put the Rams up on top, 2-0.

Less than a minute later, with the Blazes still on the power play, Gushee struck again. He grabbed the puck at the blue line and wound his way through the Westbrook defense and fired it past Peabbles to put the Rams up on top 3-0.

That was really all the Rams needed in the game, as the Blazes were unable to put anything past goalie Donny Gearon, who had 13 saves on his way to the shutout win.

The win was only the second of the season for the Rams (2-7-0), the loss dropped Westbrook’s record to 5-4-1. The Blazes are in action next on Jan. 26 when they face off against South Portland. The Rams will take on Deering at USM on Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
