The cause of a Friday night fire at a home in Sebago is still being investigated by state fire marshals.

Rick Shephard of the Maine State Fire Marshals Office said he still needed to interview Bruno and Wendy Shaw, who were not at their Kimball Hill Road home when the blaze broke out.

Shephard said the interview and a review of photographs taken by witnesses could help determine the cause for a fire that kept firemen from Sebago and area towns busy until early Saturday morning.

The fire that was reported at around 9:15 p.m., fire departments throughout the area combated ice, snow and flames until about 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Sebago Deputy Fire Chief Alan Greene.

The department received about six cell phone calls reporting the fire, but callers were unsure of the exact location of the fire, saying it was on Route 11 near the North Sebago United Methodist Church.

Greene said the rear of the house had already collapsed when firefighters arrived on Kimball Hill Road, just aound the corner from the church. Greene was uncertain of the address as no number was on the outside of the house.

Efforts to control the blaze were hampered by ice and snow that forced firemen to use a hydrant at New River Dam, three miles from the scene. Crews also considered trucking in water from Naples near the Causeway Bridge.

Cold temperatures hampered the cause as the pipe on the aerial ladder used by the Sebago department froze and broke and a fire engine pump also froze. A fire truck from Bridgton moved in to fight the fire despite frozen gauges that prevented firemen from knowing how much water they were using.

Crews from Baldwin, Bridgton, Casco, Harrison, Naples, Raymond and Standish joined Sebago firemen to bring the fire under control in two hours. Individual hot spots, many caused by the collapse of the rear of the home, kept firemen on the scene for another three hours.

Greene thanked area residents for shoveling a path to the nearby church, which was opened to give firemen shelter from the cold. Neighbors also served coffee and the Salvation Army provided hot food and drinks for firemen.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
