The Cape Elizabeth boys ice hockey team fell to 3-3 with Saturday’s 6-1 loss to Kennebunk at the Portland Ice Arena. The Capers were unable to get anything going offensively, and they were outshot by the Rams 24-12.
Kennebunk scored the game’s first two goals before Cape’s Sean Eubanks beat Rams’ goalie Mark Airoldi with five-and-a-half minutes left in the opening period. But that would be the lone score the Capers would get past the Kennebunk netminder as he turned away 11 shots.
Cape had several power play opportunities during the contest but they were unable to take advantage of their man-up advantage.
The Capers were sitting at No. 4 in the most recent West B Heal Point standings behind top-seeded York, No. 2 Leavitt and No. 3 Maranacook/Monmouth. The top five teams in the region make the playoffs.
Cape was back in action on Monday as they hosted Yarmouth (1-7) at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Capers had little trouble with Yarmouth, skating to an 8-0 win.
The Capers came out of the gate flying, putting up three first period goals from Matt Roy (with an assist from Tanner Tremblay at 8:37), a power play goal from Zack Labbe (with assists from Sam St. Germain and Peter Kelley at 9:45) and another power play goal from St. Germain (with assists from Kelley and Labbe at 14:43).
The Capers didn’t ease off during the second period, beating Yarmouth goalie Ethan Gray for two more scores. Labbe got his second goal of the game with assists from Eubanks and St. Germain at 11:09 of the second, and Griffen Rockwell popped in the Capers third power play goal of the game at 14:57 with an assist credited to Colby Pearson.
The Capers added three more in the third period, as Pearson got one past Gray at 2:29 (Roy and Tremblay got the assists). Cape’s Vinny Dell’Aquila got in on the scoring action with a goal from Max Foner and Mike Holden at 6:23 of the period. Kelley got a goal to go along with his two assists at 13:51 of the period (Sam Hallowell got the assist).
The Capers are scheduled to play Scarborough at the Portland Ice Arena on Thursday, Jan. 10.
