Karyn Roy, of Windham, thought she was setting out by herself on a solo kayaking adventure along the Maine Coast last summer but in actuality she wasn’t alone at all. Halfway through the trip, when a nagging upset stomach wouldn’t subside, the former nationally ranked kayaker discovered she was pregnant.

“Near Bath Iron Works, I was dealing with a lot of nausea and fatigue. I was in good shape for the trip but that took a lot out of me,” said.

She’s expecting her first child to arrive Feb. 23, exactly seven months after she finished the 350-mile-long Maine Coast Trail from Kennebunkport to Machias.

Overall, the 28-year-old Roy said the month-long trip was fantastic. She slept in a hammock on small islands offshore and enjoyed the birds and seals that played in the waves. Since she is a volunteer with Maine Handicapped Skiing, Roy also held clinics with handicapped kayakers along the way and used her trip to raise more than $3,000 in pledges along the way.

The weather cooperated up until the last four days when heavy fog and rain set in. From Acadia north, she never saw land and had to make her way using sea charts and compass.

“It was a really intense fog. It’s funny because I was really looking forward to that stretch,” she said.

Roy, a special education teacher at Crooked River Elementary School in Naples and a two-time national champion in U.S. Freestyle Kayaking Association, said her favorite part of the trip was paddling across Penobscot Bay from Rockland to Stonington via Vinalhaven.

“My husband joined me for that portion, which was wonderful,” Roy said.
