The Scarborough Public Library has launched its community appeal to support the Annual Fund.

“The library staff works so diligently to balance the demand for technology with the need to maintain a vibrant collection,” said Lenore Rapkin, president of the board of trustees. “The library added over 4,000 items to the collection last year alone. It truly reflects a commitment to those cardholders who seek tangible items to check out.”

Nancy Crowell, library director, said consumer demand has required an increase in technological services.

“The public computers have become a lifeline for many in our community. On any given day, you’ll see all of them in use,” she said. “We now offer wireless Internet access throughout the building. That service has been particularly valuable.”

The library has also updated its Web site to include increased access to the catalog, inter-library materials, reference resources and e-newsletters that users can subscribe to for free. “We are making every effort to accommodate those residents who desire access to services but can’t always come into the Library to find what they need,” said Crowell. “The Web site brings a virtual library to them.”

Both Rapkin and Crowell acknowledge the generous financial support provided by the town. “The appropriation provided by the town does not represent the entire operating budget,” said Rapkin. “The Annual Fund supplements the town’s contribution and sustains the level of services our community expects and deserves.”

Residents can contribute by picking up a remittance envelope at the library, or going online at www.library.scarborough.me.us.
