Westbrook officials are suiting up and taking the plunge Sunday to benefit the city’s youth.

Led by Police Chief Bill Baker, a group of educators and city councilors are hopping in a raft and heading down Saccarrappa Falls to raise money for the Mission Possible Teen Center. The fundraiser, “Taking the Fall for Westbrook’s Youth,” will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Though Brian Mazjanis, principal of Wescott Junior High School, has never rafted before, he said he’s willing to bear the cold for the cause.

“I really don’t want to get wet,” he said Wednesday, but he has faith in Baker’s 30 years of rafting experience to get the team through the water without a hitch.

“I’m sure Chief Baker can get us over there just fine,” he said.

City Councilor Drew Gattine said he hasn’t been rafting in 20 years, but is looking forward to the event.

“It’s going to be a little bit cold,” he said, “but it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Joining Baker, Mazjanis and Gattine in the raft will be Jon Ross, director of alternative and adult education in Westbrook, Westbrook High School substance abuse counselor Bruce Dyer and City Councilor Brendan Rielly. There will be free hot chocolate available for spectators.

Baker is asking for individual sponsorships of either $5 for each rafter or $30 for entire crew, as well as corporate donations for the event. Interested parties should contact Maria Dorn at 450-1993, 822-2605, or by e-mail at mdorn4@yahoo.com; or Mission Possible’s executive director, Evelyn Blanchard, at 854-2800.
