Boys soccer
The feel-good story of the Lake Region High fall sports season was the playoff run the boys soccer team made in the Western Maine Class B tournament.
The Lakers ended the regular season with a 4-7-3 record and they reached the nine-team tournament as the ninth-ranked team. They opened the post-season with a prelim win at Oak Hill and they followed that effort up with the shocker of the West B tourney.
Lake Region unceremoniously dumped an undefeated and top-ranked Maranacook squad by a 2-1 score to advance to the regional semifinals. The Lakers’ memorable postseason stretch came to an end at Freeport with a 1-0 setback to the Falcons – just one game shy of the regional final.
Girls soccer
The Lake Region girls soccer team was ranked sixth at the start of the West B tournament this year thanks to a hard-earned 5-7-2 mark in the regular season. The Lakers had some wins against decent Class B and C opponents, and they headed into the postseason thinking they could play with anyone.
Perhaps because of what had happened one day earlier to their boys soccer team, the Maranacook girls took nothing for granted in their West B tournament quarterfinal against Lake Region. The Lakers went toe-to-toe with the No. 3 seed before falling by a 4-3 margin.
Field hockey
It was another solid year for the Lake Region field hockey team. The Lakers had some big wins against very strong teams like Greely, York, Falmouth and Yarmouth and they finished the regular season at 9-4-1 in the very competitive Western Maine Conference and they opened the tourney as the No. 6 seed.
The Lakers faced a very good team in Leavitt in the West B quarterfinals and they hung close before seeing their season end by a 2-1 score. (Leavitt went on to reach the regional final.)
Football
The Lake Regional football team struggled right from the start, losing their first four games of the year. But the Lakers persevered and won two of their next three games (victories over Poland and Gray-New Gloucester) before being shut down in the final two games of the regular season against playoff-bound Cape Elizabeth and Fryeburg.
Golf
The Lakers’ golf team went 7-3 on the season with multiple wins over Poland, Gray-New Gloucester, Fryeburg and Poland. Quinn Allen tied for eighth in the Class B schoolboy championship tournament and teammate Aaron Chase finished 21st.
Cross country
The girls cross country team finished 12th at the Western Maine Class B regional championship meet. The team’s top finisher was senior Hannah Fillmore-Patrick.
The boys cross country team placed 11th at the West B regional meet with senior Zachary Mains being the first Laker runner over the finish line.
