A special workshop on West African Drumming with Annegret Baier – from the all-women drumming group “Innana, Sisters in Rythym” – will be offered Saturday, Dec. 1 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Unity Church on River Road in Windham.
Baier is a German-born percussionist specializing in West African hand drumming and a variety of ethnic music styles played on instruments from around the world. She received her classical music training in violin, voice and piano from the University of Music in Stuttgart. She has studied with master drummers from Guinea, Ghana, Cuba and Brazil.
Baier is a teacher not only of percussion but of the role of drumming within West African culture. Her classes invite the direct participation of the listeners in rhythmic training exercises including body percussion, movement and drumming. She also performs solo for school children of all ages, special interest groups, and lovers of world music who will delight in her skillful playing and her powerful and uplifting stage presence.
The fee for the workshop is $40 per person, which can be paid at the door. Call 893-1233 for more information or e-mail unitychurch@roadrunner.com.
