Editor,

I have a holiday story for you.

Last week, I was at the Windham library book sale and a young boy was in front of me in the check-out line. The lady added up his books and videos and told him his total was $3. He reached deep in his pockets and pulled out a lot of change and spread it before her on the table. She counted out $3 and took it, but he pushed more of the change toward her. “No”, she said “your total bill is $3.” He insisted that she take more money. He said he had enough and he even had more money at home. She again said that all that was needed was $3.

At that point I jumped in and told him of the bake sale in the next room and suggested he take his change and buy something for his mother. He thought for a moment and said, “no, we all have plenty at home, I just want to make a donation to the library.” We both became quiet and the check-out lady said a heartfelt thank-you and took some of his change for a donation to the good cause of the library.

May we all be so generous in this holiday season,

Linda Griffin
