Two teenage boys were struck while walking in the travel lane of Edes Falls Road in Naples Tuesday night. The victims received minor injuries and were treated and released from Bridgton Hospital, according to state police.
According to state trooper Joseph Bureau, three boys were walking in the travel lane at about 5 p.m. after getting off the late bus from Lake Region High School. The boys were walking north while a car driven by Edwin Barker of Horace Files Road in Naples was driving south. According to Bureau, Barker struck two of the boys after failing to see the approaching pedestrians because the headlights of an oncoming car temporarily blinded his vision of his travel lane. When the car passed, Barker attempted to avert a collision but failed and struck two of the three teens. However, he was able to slow his speed enough before striking the teens so as not to cause major injury.
Bureau said he did not know why the boys were walking in the travel lane toward an oncoming vehicle. The road was unlit, and Bureau said Barker was driving the posted speed of 35 mph.
“I’m just glad they’re all right,” Bureau said.
