The work at the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce has taken on a new dimension with the dedication of a mobile unit Monday in Bridgton.
Though the ceremony dedicating the mobile information unit – a converted 24-foot recreational vehicle – to longtime chamber volunteer Ginnie Moran came months after the unit was first towed to the Maine Blues Festival, it served as overdue recognition for Moran, Mike McClellan, the chamber’s executive director, and the increased presence of the chamber in the Lakes Region area.
“Ginnie represents a lot of people here,” McClellan said before handing Moran the scissors for the ribbon cutting. McClellan praised her for more than a decade of volunteering with the chamber and for her boundless energy in helping visitors, residents and businesses in the Lakes Region.
McClellan’s remarks came days after the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, at its annual banquet in Bangor, named him Chamber Executive of the Year Oct. 24. The chamber recognized McClellan’s work in adding chamber members and seeking to improve the business region’s climate.
The need for a mobile unit was first recognized nearly two years ago, McClellan said. As the chamber helped organize and attend events like the Mushers Bowl, Lakes Region Brew Fest and Fryeburg Fair, chamber volunteers needed a better way to exhibit member literature, and sometimes a setting better suited for cold or inclement weather.
Creating a mobile unit was a project more than a dozen chamber member organizations supported, starting with a donated RV from McBurnie Oil. Using plans created by Tom Quinn of Hancock Lumber, and materials donated by that company, students from Future Builders School, supervised by Jack Aceto, rebuilt the mobile unit from the axles up.
Aceto said students from throughout southern Maine take on projects such as this for Future. Here, both the automotive and carpentry teams worked on the frame and interior, including the porch where Moran snipped the ribbon Monday.
Other businesses and individuals lending time, support and materials to the cause included Everlast Roofing Inc., Mark Storck, Lee Eastman, Portland Auto and Body Inc., McIver Electric, Lake Region Auto Supply, Dan Loan and Ovide’s Used Cars.
With heat and electricity, the mobile unit is a place where event visitors can learn more about attractions and businesses in the Lakes Region no matter what the climate is outdoors.
After cutting the ribbon, Moran recalled her first experience volunteering for the chamber.
She said after someone asked her if she could tell someone how to get “theah from heah” despite being a flatlander, her response was plain.
“I have lived all over the world,” Moran said she answered. “I can tell people how to get there.”
Ginnie Moran, a longtime volunteer with the cuts the ribbon on the chamber mobile unit dedicated in honor of her service Monday at the chamber’s Bridgton headquarters.
