Public Safety Fair
The eighth annual Standish Public Safety Fair was held Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Standish Municipal Complex. More than 200 kids and their parents were expected at the fair sponsored by the Standish Safe Community Coalition along with the Standish Fire Department.
“The purpose of the fair is to educate the public, children especially, on all aspects of safety,” said Public Safety Committee member Frank Holcomb.
Sparky the Fire Dog, McGruff the Crime Dog, and the State Farm Insurance mascot bear were on hand to meet and greet kids while educating them on fire safety, crime prevention and safe teen driving.
The local Mason’s chapter also returned this year with the Child Identification Program.
The identification program is designed to combat child abduction and assist in finding lost children. After registering, parents allow their children to do a three-minute interview on videotape, be fingerprinted, and have dental impressions performed, all of which goes into a permanent record that authorities will use if the child is ever abducted.
All kids attending were treated to free, temporary tattoos, hayrides to the secret pumpkin patch, pumpkins, and public safety fair T-shirts. Attendees were also able to watch Standish firefighters perform a simulated car extracation.
Project Graduation Benefit
Also on Saturday, the third annual Scrapin’ for Project Graduation was held at Bonny Eagle High School to raise money for Project Graduation Class of 2009.
“People pay a fee to come and scrapbook all day,” said Chris Wallace one of the event’s organizer. “We have door prizes, raffles, auctions and fun. Lori Marean and Robin Grovo do a fantastic job making this a great day for all who attend.”
This marks the third time the event has been held and so far it has raised more than $3,600. The next Scrapin’ day will be held in March.
