Windham 6
Cheverus 35
The Windham Eagles went into Boulos Stadium in Portland on Saturday hoping to end a three-game losing streak with a win over the Cheverus Stags.
When the final gun sounded, Windham (1-6) had dropped their fourth in a row by a 35-6 score to the Stags (3-4).
The game was close throughout the first half, with the only score coming with 4:12 left in the second quarter. Topher Pochebit, who finished the game with two touchdowns and160 yards rushing, broke through the Eagles’ line for a 23-yard touchdown. Ryan McQuaid added the extra point, giving the Stags a 7-0 lead.
The second half started off with a bang as Pochebit took the opening kickoff back 95 yards for what appeared to be a touchdown. However, the Stags were called for an illegal block in the back, nullifying the touchdown and giving the Stags the ball on the Windham 19.
The penalty proved to be a costly one as just two plays later, Windham’s Travis Guerrette picked off Cheverus quarterback Vinnie Ciampi in the end zone with 11:03 left in the third, giving the Eagles the ball on their own 20 and new life.
Windham was unable to take advantage of its opportunity, and was forced to punt.
But then fate intervened again.
The Stags’ Ian Schwarz fumbled the Eagles’ punt, and Guerrette pounced on the loose ball, giving the Eagles new life at the Stags’ 41.
And this time, Windham took advantage of a golden opportunity. After back Nate Johnson ran for a first down to the Cheverus 31, quarterback Jackson Taylor tossed a screen pass to Sam Harmon, who sprinted down the sideline for a 41-yard touchdown. Cheverus blocked the extra point attempt by Tyler Littlefield, and the score stood 7-6 in favor of the Stags at the end of the third quarter.
But that was as close as the Eagles got.
As the fourth quarter started, the Stags’ Nate Wiley broke through for a three-yard touchdown to make the score 14-6. Pochebit got a 34-yard touchdown run with about 10 minutes left in the quarter, which made the score 21-6. About five minutes later, Ciampi had a one-yard touchdown run to make it 28-6. Wiley closed out the scoring about two minutes later with a 63-yard touchdown run.
Windham will close out their season this Friday night with a 7 p.m. home game against Westbrook. The Blazes (2-5) come into the game off a 34-0 home loss to Gorham last Saturday afternoon.
