Bonny Eagle 3

Biddeford 1

Peyton Dostie and Janessa Plummer scored second half goals less than a minute apart to propel the Bonny Eagle field hockey team past Biddeford 3-1 on Tuesday.

The Scots then survived a furious late game comeback attempt from the Tigers to secure their eighth win of the season.

“I can’t believe it,” said Bonny Eagle coach Patty Bourget. “Last time we came here, we beat them 1-0. We knew it would be a tough game because they have nice hard drives and they take them fast and they’re a very aggressive team. So I’m very happy with the win.”

The teams traded jabs in the first half until the Scots finally broke through when Becky King scored the game’s first goal at the 19:35 mark. The Scots seemed to be well in control in the first half, with several good scoring chances, including two penalty corners in the final three minutes. But Biddeford goalie Cheyenne Meredith was up to the task and came up with several key saves.

In the second half, the Scots doubled their lead when Dostie scored on a penalty corner at the 21:46 mark. Less than a minute later, Plummer found the back of the cage on a shot from the top of the circle and suddenly the 1-0 lead was 3-0.

“We work on corners a lot and we can just make things happen in there,” Bourget said. “We have some tough kids up front.”

The Tigers managed to get one goal back late in the second half when Autumn Linteau scored off a penalty corner to cut the deficit down to two.

“We don’t know how to get ourselves back into a game,” said Biddeford coach Megan Boudreau. “Once we’re down, we’re kind of down and we can’t get ourselves back up. If I had a team that didn’t have the ability, I wouldn’t be upset. Teams lose and I don’t mind losing, but when I know I have a team that shouldn’t be losing, it gets to you.”

In the final minutes, the Tigers came to life and began to put pressure on the Scots. But it was too late to mount a comeback and the Scots held on for the win.

The loss drops the Tigers to 8-4 on the season. They were scheduled to face Deering on Thursday. With the tournament around the corner, Boudreau says her team needs to turn things around.

“At this point it’s got nothing to do with me,” she said. “It’s got to be from them, it has to be their decision, and they have to turn it around. I’ve done what I can, and its not working so they need to do it.”

With the win Bonny Eagle improves to 8-4 with only one game left on their regular season schedule, a showdown with Gorham on Monday. Bourget feels her team could be dangerous come tourney time.

“I think everyone counted us out this season,” she said. “My team is just starting to come together at the right time.”
