Scarborough 3
Bonny Eagle 1
Amanda Daudelin and Lexi Udeh tallied first half goals for the Red Storm girls soccer team as they held on for a 3-1 win over Bonny Eagle Tuesday night. Alex Laniewski also scored for Scarborough and Kate Boyer scored the lone goal for the Scots.
Daudelin scored the game’s first goal in the ninth minute when she dribbled straight up the middle and fired a shot past Bonny Eagle’s Carrie Christiansen for a 1-0 Scarborough lead.
“They were pulling an offsides trap there and it was a smart play,” said Scarborough coach Mike Farley. “She saw it and dribbled through the gap. They thought she was going to pass it, but she didn’t. She made the right read and scored. That was huge to get a goal early. Lately we haven’t had that and it was huge.”
The Scots generated scoring opportunities of their own in the first half. In the 22nd minute, the Scots had a rush, but were not able to get a shot on net.
Shortly after the Bonny Eagle chance, Udeh doubled the Red Storm lead when she fired a shot at the net. Christiansen made a diving stab at the ball, but it caromed off her hands and into the net to give Scarborough a 2-0 lead.
Bonny Eagle cut the deficit back down to just one goal in the 30th minute when Boyer dribbled down the right side and launched the ball up over the head of the Scarborough goalie and into the net.
Following the goal, the Scarborough defense snuffed out several good Bonny Eagle chances the rest of the way. Midway through the second half the Scots got an odd man rush, but came away without a shot on net because of the aggressive defense.
“We made a mistake on the goal,” Farley said. “It ran through a couple of players when we had a chance to clear it. But 95 percent of the game we were winning head balls and making crisp tackles and the goalkeeper was solid. That’s what we need to do to win games.”
With just over a minute to play, Laniewski scored to give the Storm their cushion back. Her shot went off the goalkeeper’s hands and trickled into the back of the net.
“It was a very close game, it could have gone either way,” Farley said. “There were a lot of free kicks we gave up and that last goal epitomized what we did all game. We worked all the way to the end and followed the ball to the goal.”
The win puts Scarborough’s record at 8-2-1. They were scheduled to face Portland on Thursday. The Scots fall to 6-5-1 as they look to find their way into the tourney. The Scots will take on Thornton Academy on Tuesday.
