Bonny Eagle 46

Westbrook 0

In the first three games of their season, the Bonny Eagle Scots football team has scored at least 40 points. Their fourth game, against Westbrook on Thursday, was more of the same.

Quarterback Nate Doehler threw two touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown on an eight-yard keeper during the first half, and had 209 total yards of offense during the game. Tailback Ryan Nason rushed for 103 yards and scored two touchdowns during the second half to give the Scots a 46-0 victory over the Blue Blazes. With the win, Bonny Eagle improves to 4-0, while Westbrook falls to 1-3.

“Any time you come to Westbrook, sometimes it can be a tough place to play,” said Bonny Eagle head coach Kevin Cooper. “Westbrook’s much improved, Coach Weiss has done a nice job. They’re a physical team that is not very far away from being able to compete in this league.”

Westbrook opened the game with their offense on the field, but Bonny Eagle’s defense forced a fumble on the second play of the game. With the Scots in control of the football, quarterback Nate Doehler hit Travis Dunn for a five-yard touchdown pass on their sixth play of the drive, giving Bonny Eagle a 7-0 lead after the extra point.

“It’s the second week in a row we got an early turnover right on the first series and were able to convert that into points,” said Cooper. “That’s big. When you get that in a game, it gets the team off to such a great start. It’s a big help.”

Westbrook tailback Corey Luce showed flashes of brilliance during the first half, rushing for 70 yards, including numerous runs for over 20 yards.

“He’s a great player and a good kid,” said Westbrook head coach Daryle Weiss. “He’s a very good football player. I was proud of his effort.”

Bonny Eagle’s second touchdown came late in the first quarter. Doehler hit Brian Butler with a 59-yard touchdown pass to increase Bonny Eagle’s lead to 14-0 after the extra point. Butler was chased down by a number of Westbrook defenders on the way to the end zone, and had to break two tackles in order to earn the touchdown.

During the second quarter, Doehler kicked a field goal to put the score at 17-0, then later ran an eight-yard QB keeper to make the score 24-0 after the extra point just before halftime.

Bonny Eagle opened the second half with Ryan Nason taking over at tailback, and was firing on all cylinders. Nason rushed for 35 yards on six plays to put the score at 31-0, and closed out the third quarter with a stellar 60-yard run, increasing Bonny Eagle’s lead to 38-0.

“Our first two tailbacks got hurt, one yesterday in practice and the other one early in the game, and we’re fortunate that we have some pretty good young players,” said Cooper. “Nason did a great job in the second half. He stepped up his game. We’ve got a lot of other good young players too, and I think if they were called on, they’d shine as well.”

Westbrook opened the fourth quarter with a three-and-out and was forced to punt. Bonny Eagle followed with their own three-and-out, but Westbrook’s Logan Willette blocked the punt, giving the Blazes great field position in the red zone.

“We’re teaching the kids that we’re going to compete, and regardless of the score, we’re going to play every down,” said Weiss.

With the Blue Blazes within striking distance, the Bonny Eagle defense continued their already solid performance by shutting down Westbrook’s offense and keeping the shutout intact. The Scots defense, already forcing a fumble and getting four sacks, added a goal line stand to their night.

“Our defense gave up some yards, but I think that’s more because of Westbrook being a good offense, and what Coach Weiss is doing with their offense is some hard stuff to stop,” said Cooper. “Our guys really rose up on the goal line to be able to keep them out of the end zone and preserve the shutout.”

Tailback Tony Forrester added a 58-yard run for a touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring for Bonny Eagle.

“As far as we’re concerned, Bonny Eagle’s in the past, and we’re thinking about Thornton Academy next week,” said Weiss.

“We’ve got a little bit of a long weekend, which will be nice, playing a Thursday night game,” said Cooper. “We’ve got Noble at home next week, so we’ve got to keep trying to get better.”
