Gray resident Anthony Nelson, 24, is in fair condition at Maine Medical Center after being admitted with head injuries resulting from an attack by three intruders wearing ski masks Tuesday night during an invasion at his 58 Forest Lake Road home.
The assailants broke into Nelson’s home around 9:20 p.m. through a window they smashed with a gas grill propane tank. They then attacked Nelson with fists, and when Nelson tried to defend himself with a bat they took it and used it to strike him in the head. The attackers stole his wallet and a bottle of prescription OxyContin. Police said that the prescription was filled within the last week, and the bottle contained no more than 100 pills.
Investigators believe the assailants escaped on foot for a short distance, but had a vehicle nearby.
Nelson was home alone when the incident occurred.
“All home invasions in Maine usually have a drug connection,” Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said. However, he said it is too early to tell whether this case can be linked to other home invasions that have occurred in the past.
On Wednesday, state police detectives were at Nelson’s home gathering evidence since the invasion. It is still unclear whether Nelson knew his attackers, investigators said.
The attackers are still at large.
