The Windham field hockey team nearly earned its second straight tie on Tuesday, but a Noble score with 10 seconds left in the second overtime lifted the Knights to a 2-1 win. The Eagles’ Kelsey Babb scored in the first half of play with Allison McKay assisting.
The loss leaves Windham with a 1-5-1 record and a game at undefeated Sanford on Thursday, Sept. 20.
One week ago in Waterboro, the Eagles also went into overtime after finishing regulation in a 1-1 tie with Massabesic.
The Mustangs and Eagles played to a 0-0 first half deadlock with both squads taking turns putting some pressure on the other as play went back and forth across the field. Neither team had an edge momentum-wise although the Mustangs may have had a shot or two come closer to scoring than the Eagles did.
Massabesic used a second half surge to pull ahead with just under 23 minutes to play. Ally Buckbee buried a shot that gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead and they immediately looked for an insurance goal. Instead, the Eagles turned them away defensively and they tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Christina Maiorino with eight and a half minutes left in regulation.
The teams remained tied after the overtime session and both squads had to settle for the “it could have been worse” outcome.
Both teams also finished with an equal amount of shots as Windham goalie Taylor Duncanson stopped 14 Massabesic scoring attempts while Mustang goalie Alicia Vanasse turned away 14 Windham shots.
