No more hummingbirds

Fall is in the air here in Sebago. There are many signs. First, I am sad to say, I no longer have hummingbirds visiting the feeder beside my kitchen window. I miss them, and look forward to their return early next May.

Mrs. Burnell, whom we bought the house from, left me a feeder, and note, telling me exactly how to make the hummingbird food by boiling 3 cups water to 1 cup sugar, and she mentioned that if the feeder is not hanging by early May, the birds will perch on the nearby clothesline and scold me, which they do. If we have a warm September, I have found they will stay almost until the end of the month.

Boats coming out

Another sure sign of fall, is all the boats passing by me on the road, being towed by both in- and out-of-state vehicles, all heading for winter storage. Some folks have left their boats in the water, for fall foliage trips no doubt. I love seeing them out on the water in an early morning fog – so pretty!

School board meeting

On Sept. 17, the school board will convene at Sebago Elementary School at 7 p.m. I will cover the results in next week’s article. These meetings rotate throughout the Lake Region School district of Sebago, Naples, Bridgton and Casco.

Parent Teacher Club holds first meeting

I briefly mentioned last week about our Parent Teacher Club. The first meeting was Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m., in the Sebago Elementary School Library. Members are seeking ideas on what parents would like to see this year. For example: Family Movie Night, Winter Carnival, Family Bingo Night, Read-a-thon, etc. Also, they want to know if there is an interest in a Mom/Dad Night Out for parents to get together and socialize child-free. Please let them know what you think.

If you are unable to attend meetings you may contact members of the PTC via e-mail at dfmccarthy@fairpoint.net. Or, you may just send a note to school with your child addressed: To PTC.

The club will continue with its usual activities of providing field trips for each class, pizza parties, teacher appreciation activities, annual science fair, mileage club incentive prizes (for those who walk during recess in colder weather), and many more projects to support the curriculum and enhance the childrens’ educational experiences.

Spaulding Memorial Library held its first Toddler Storytime of the season on Friday, Sept. 14. The theme was butterflies.

Bean supper

If you like bean suppers, you need to stop by the North Sebago United Methodist church. One Saturday per month, the church gets a great turnout for these popular meals. This month, the Bean Supper will be held on Sept. 22, from 5-6:30 p.m.

Apple orchards open

I am happy to say that the apple orchards are open. I saw a sign at the end of Long Hill Road with a big apple on it – didn’t need to see any more! Apple picking, apple cider, big orange pumpkins, scarecrows, haystacks all say fall is here at last. Oh, did I mention, that I am a fall person? This is my favorite season!

Hunting season coming

My husband and all the other avid hunters are happy that autumn has arrived as well. My husband doesn’t go online very often, but he does have the Web site for Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife bookmarked on my computer. Copies of the State of Maine Hunting and Trapping Laws and Rules are usually available at both Jordan’s Store and the Sebago Town Hall. Jordan’s is a popular spot for hunters and fisherman to gather. They have a current pile of photos by the register that sportsmen and even non-hunters, myself included, enjoy viewing of the many fish caught or game that have been brought into the store as it is a tagging station. I love to see the proud look of the adults and children with their prizes. The Web site is www.mefishwildlife.com for those who are interested. Phone number for Jordan’s is 787-3866.

Jewelry-making group

Anyone interested in making jewelry from recycled materials? The group meets at Nancy Fitch’s Stained Glass Studio. All proceeds from “A Touch of Glass Jewelry” go to benefit Spaulding Memorial Library. Contact Joanne Nestruk at 787-3382 with any questions.

Oops

Corrections from last week’s article: Michael Cain has returned to Sebago as a soccer coach, but is not a staff member of the elementary school. Apologies for not including the photo of the lovely bouquet that Vanessa Wallace gave me! It is still safely hidden in my digital camera, I being unable to upload it.
